Plan Your Trip

Everything you need to turn up prepared — the seasons, the journey, the packing list and the safety essentials of big-game country.

When to Come

Reading the seasons

Chitwan's humid subtropical monsoon climate shapes what you'll see and how comfortable the journey is.

Oct – Dec

The prime window. After the monsoon retreats in mid-October, humidity drops and days ease from ~36°C toward ~18°C. Clear skies; winter migrants arrive.

Jan – Mar

Cool nights near 5°C give way to rising warmth. After grassland management the grass is lower, improving wildlife visibility — good for safaris.

Jun – Sep

Monsoon brings most of the year's ~2,500mm of rain. Lush and green, but rivers swell and some tracks and activities become difficult.

Getting Here

How to reach Chitwan

The park sits about 120 km south-west of Kathmandu. Public buses, tourist coaches and domestic flights connect the region — the nearest airport is at Bharatpur, a short drive from the Sauraha gateway. Many visitors arrive by road from Kathmandu or Pokhara in roughly 5–6 hours.

Be Prepared

What to pack & staying safe

What to pack

Neutral, muted clothing for safaris; long sleeves and trousers for sun, thorns and mosquitoes. Insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat, refillable water, binoculars, and sturdy shoes for walks. A light layer for cool winter mornings on the river.

Staying safe

This is genuine wildlife country. Always follow your guide; jungle walks use trained, often armed guides for good reason. Keep a respectful distance from rhinos and never get between an animal and water or its young. Be crocodile-aware near rivers and never swim where not permitted.
